2 easy protective styles you can do on your natural hair

Spread the love

There are so many protective styles you can do with your hair. I have tried quite a few, but there are two that I really do very frequently. These protective hairstyles do not require extensions. I do love crochet hairstyles or individual braids, though I rarely do the latter since it can take a very long time, like the wholeeeee day. The style turns out cute, but whewwww! When I do braids with extensions, it’s typically a braided ponytail or a sleek ponytail.

However, when it comes to protective hairstyles on my natural hair, my go-to are African threading and twists [mini twists, flat twists, and medium twists]. This is primarily because I can do these on wash day. I love the salon, but sometimes I just prefer to be home and do my hair at my own pace.

African threading

This is actually a style I did a lot as a young one when my hair was relaxed. Funny enough, I didn’t view it as a protective style. Just thought it was super adorable! Now, I do it after I wash my hair. I twist it from root to tip. Not too tight since I don’t want to put a lot of tension on my hair. Once I get to the tip, I make a knot. Usually, I keep it in for 2 to 5 days before putting it in the next protective style, which is…

Twists!

Even though I do flat twists from time to time, the main ones I do are the mini twists or medium twists. When I do this style, I part my hair into 8 sections. Next, I work from the back to the front and the free part. This is my preference because the hair tends to be full and takes me anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to two and a half hours. I usually keep that in for 5 to 10 days and then wear it as a twist-out.

Voila!

These are my two go-to natural protective hairstyles. They are also low manipulative styles, which is another great thing I love about these styles.
